Zero Carbon for the Future

In 2016, Hong Kong was found to have a total of more than 60% electricity use accounts of total local emissions and 89% of total electricity use for the buildings account. In the same year, Hong Kong was able to have its first zero-carbon building. And three years prior, the World Green Building Council was able to recognize the Sing Yin Secondary School as one of the greenest schools on Earth.

During the Paris climate conference, countries have gathered and came into an agreement to transform economies into zero carbon.

Just like Sing Yin, other schools can also become zero carbon schools. This will be very efficient in teaching the younger generation of sustainable practices at an early age, especially when they are learning in a place that may serve as a role model.

What happens when it is zero carbon?

Zero carbon buildings do not emit any net carbon dioxide during operation. In addition, they are more dependent on renewable energy. This, in turn, greatly reduces greenhouse gasses and reduces the drastic impacts of global warming and climate change.

In zero carbon schools, it is expected that the learning institution will have a good design, sustainable purchases, machines, and appliances, and prioritizes the conservation of energy.

Maintaining a zero-carbon future

Once everything is set up, it is very important to monitor the school’s energy consumption behavior. This will allow the administration to determine the changes that may occur. In addition, they will be able to determine if there are areas that are in need of improvement.

Upon adjustment, students, teachers, faculty, and staff will be able to determine the difference of having a zero-carbon school. With gadgets and devices having a connection, maximum optimization and utilization is expected. In addition, they will also be able to experience a more comfortable learning environment.

Hopefully, these students will soon be able to experience the improvement in the Earth’s ozone layer and will be able to live in a safer and more comfortable planet.
